Why is the Leaning Tower of Pisa\u00a0Actually\u00a0Leaning?<\/h2>\n

Before you visit Pisa\u00a0either\u00a0solo or with a tour group, it is worth knowing\u00a0a bit\u00a0of\u00a0its history.\u00a0Construction for the Leaning Tower of Pisa\u00a0all\u00a0began in 1173 and\u00a0went on\u00a0for almost 200 years before\u00a0it was done\u00a0in 1372.\u00a0Contrary to popular belief, the tower\u00a0didn\u2019t\u00a0start leaning due to an earthquake. Instead, the tower started tilting during construction due to the soft ground on one side of the site that\u00a0couldn\u2019t\u00a0support the weight of the\u00a0tower\u2019s\u00a0foundation. Once builders\u00a0started\u00a0building\u00a0the second story, the tower\u00a0started\u00a0to sink and tilt. As the centuries passed, attempts\u00a0were made\u00a0to correct the lean. Builders tried compensating by making the columns on the lower side of the tower a lot taller, but this only\u00a0made the issue worse. In later centuries, engineers replaced most of the lower columns with\u00a0stronger\u00a0materials to help withstand the\u00a0weight of the tower. However, the lean stayed. Back in 2001, a crew of engineers worked to reduce the tilt by removing\u00a0any soil from\u00a0underneath the foundation on the highest side of the lean.\u00a0This effort\u00a0was\u00a0truly\u00a0successful in reducing\u00a0the tilt by a minor amount, but the tower is now considered stable.<\/p>\n
