Some History of Peru\u2019s Inca Trail<\/h2>\n

Machu Pichu is thought to have been built by Pachacuti Inca Yupanqui, who was the ruler of the Inca during the mid-1400s at the peak of their power. The archeological site sits right on the eastern slope of the Andes, right above a loop in the Urubamba River, which is nearly 8,000 feet above sea level. The site covers over 80,000 acres on a plateau with green terraced fields on the edge that was once used for crop growing. Its stunning views and well-preserved architecture has earned Machu Picchu a title of one of the Seven New Wonders of the World. It\u2019s one of the most recognizable ancient sites in the\u00a0world<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Best Times of Year to Visit the Inca Trail<\/h2>\n

The best way to look at it is to break down the various seasons in the region and close by Cusco, Peru. Keep in mind Peru lines in the southern hemisphere, and the seasons are opposite those up in the North. Summertime, or June through August specifically, is peak\u00a0tourism<\/a>\u00a0season, it will be the busiest time of the year, but it’s also dry season in the Andes, and you are more likely to have the best weather ever on the Inca Trail. You could also go during the spring and fall. Outside of a\u00a0summer<\/a>\u00a0holiday, the trail is likely to be less crowded while weather conditions vary, but it might still be optimal. September or May would also be a great time to plan a trek on the Inca Trail to Macchu Picchu. December to February are the most likely seasons to be very rainy, and the trail is typically closed in February for repairs.<\/p>\n

Which Route and Speed Work for You?<\/h2>\n

While preparing for the Inca Trail, you will want to think about the speed and the route you want to take. There are different Inca Trail tours and hikes that will take you past the Inca ruins, but only the Classic Inca Trail will take you on the traditional route by foot.<\/p>\n
