And while there are many situations that can disrupt your travels \u2013 <\/span>jet lag<\/span><\/a>, changed flights, one too many drinks at the pub, etc. \u2013 catching the flu can be one of the worst. If you are planning to travel this winter, it is absolutely worth the time and effort to prepare yourself and try to stay as germ free as possible. Here are some tips to help you do just that.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stay Up to Date with Vaccines<\/span><\/h2>\n

While a flu vaccine may not stop you from getting a different variation of the flu, it will help make the symptoms you suffer less severe. And don\u2019t just stop at the flu vaccine, either \u2013 check out the latest recommendations from the World Health Organization and the Centers for Disease Control to ensure you are fully prepared for travel in your destination. Also, check to see if you are eligible for a COVID booster vaccine and get one if you are.<\/span><\/p>\n

Wash Your Hands<\/span><\/h2>\n

Washing your hands is one of the best ways to prevent the spread of germs, period. Ensure that you are doing so frequently both before and during your travels. Lather your hands with soap, wash with warm water for at least 20 seconds, then rinse and dry. You can also carry a small bottle of hand sanitizer in your day pack for use when you don\u2019t have ready access to a faucet.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stay Hydrated<\/span><\/h2>\n

Keeping your body hydrated is important, especially while <\/span>flying<\/span><\/a>. During a flight, humidity levels on the plane are kept very low. This can lead to the mucous membranes within your eyes, nose, and mouth to dry out, making it much easier for germs to seep in and cause illness. To counteract this, grab a bottle of water before your flight and sip throughout the duration. You can either buy one after going through security, or bring an empty bottle from home and fill up after passing security. Before and during the flight, avoid caffeinated and alcoholic beverages as these will dry your body out further \u2013 opt for decaf <\/span>tea<\/span><\/a> instead to keep your hydration levels up. Consider packing a nasal spray and\/or eye drops to further boost your body\u2019s defense systems, especially if you\u2019re on a long flight.<\/span><\/p>\n
