World Oceans Day is celebrated by all United Nations constituencies on June 8<\/span>th<\/span>. On this day, the world places its oceans at the forefront of global thought. With climate change threatening biodiversity, figuring out how to best protect the oceans is more important now than ever before. This is especially true when you consider that over 70% of the world\u2019s surface consists of the oceans. And while much of the legwork in preserving the oceans will have to be done through national efforts and international cooperation, there are several things we can do as individuals to help save the oceans too.<\/span><\/p>\n

<\/p>\n

Use Less Plastic<\/span><\/h2>\n

It is estimated that around 17.6 billion pounds of plastics leak into the oceans every year from land-based sources. Plastic is not biodegradable, which means that the waste will continue to threaten the oceans unless we do something about it. By making use of refillable water bottles, reusable shopping bags, and more single-use alternatives, we can do our part to reduce our global society\u2019s dependence on plastic and create less waste.<\/span><\/p>\n

Reduce Your Carbon Footprint<\/span><\/h2>\n

The term \u201ccarbon footprint\u201d describes the amount of extra carbon dioxide we generate into the atmosphere because of choices we make, especially when it comes to energy usage. Taking actions such as using public transportation instead of a car, turning off the lights when you leave a room, or not cranking up the air conditioning during the summer are all great ways to reduce your carbon footprint. For travelers, consider making a donation to offset the carbon footprint of the flight to your next <\/span>adventure<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

Leave Nothing Behind When Visiting the Beach<\/span><\/h2>\n
