The Oldest Demarcated Wine Region in the World<\/h2>\n

Grape and wine production has dated back over 2000 years in the Douro Valley, when the region was more or less under the control of the Roman Republic. However, the boundaries for the valley were demarcated in 1756, which makes this region the oldest demarcated wine region in the world. As such, and due to local support, the region was also named a UNESCO World Heritage Site, one of 17 in the whole of Portugal.<\/p>\n

One of the best ways to experience the Douro Valley is by staying at traditional bed & breakfasts in the area. Known in Portuguese as quintas<\/em>, these estates are surrounded by vineyards and the natural beauty of the landscape. Many of these quintas<\/em> are over 100 years old and have been lovingly restored and converted into lodging by locals knowledgeable in the local winemaking culture.<\/p>\n
