And Italy is no different. On the night of January 5<\/span><sup style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">th<\/sup><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">, better known as Epiphany Eve, <\/span><b style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">La Befana <\/b><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">delivers gifts and candy to good children throughout Italy in a similar way to <\/span><a style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\" href=\"http:\/\/aesu.com\/blog\/aesu-world-travel\/santa-claussaint-nicholas-the-universal-figure-of-christmas-by-aesu-your-travel-experts-2\/\">St. Nicholas or Santa Claus<\/a><span style=\"line-height: 1.5em;\">. And bad children? Well, they get a lump of coal or dark candy. Sound familiar? La Befana also enters the home in a very Santa-esque way: through the chimney. But instead of milk and cookies, this holiday gift giver prefers a glass of wine and a few morsels of food.<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><i>La Befana vien di notte,<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><i>con le scarpe tutte rotte,<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><i>col cappello alla romana\u2026 <\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\" align=\"center\"><i>viva, viva, la Befana!<\/i><\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Translated, the above poem reads \u201cThe Befana comes at night \/ In worn out shoes \/ Dressed like a Roman \/ Long live the Befana!\u201d\u00a0La Befana is often depicted as an old lady riding a broomstick, covered in soot and wearing a black shawl.<\/p>\n<h2 style=\"text-align: left;\">The Legend of La Befana<\/h2>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">La Befana lived alone in a house in the hills of Italy, spending her days cooking and cleaning. One night she noticed a bright light in the sky. After some thought, La Befana decided to ignore the light and go back to work. A few days later, caravan led by Three Wise Men stopped at La Befana\u2019s house to ask for directions to Bethlehem and invited her to come with them to visit the Baby Jesus. Unfortunately, La Befana had no idea where Bethlehem was and politely declined the Wise Men\u2019s offer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">After the caravan had left, La Befana was overcome with an urge to travel to Bethlehem and meet this baby herself. So she packed a bag with baked goods and gifts for the newborn child, grabbed her broom (the new mother would certainly need help cleaning), and set out to Bethlehem. Unfortunately, La Befana soon found herself lost.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Just as La Befana began to lose hope, angels appeared to her and gave her the gift of flight. So La Befana took off and searched and searched for the Baby Jesus, but she was unable to find him. In fact, she is still searching to this day. And every Epiphany Eve La Befana takes flight to search for the Baby Jesus, visiting homes throughout Italy and giving gifts to every child she finds along the way.
